What is a SOCKS5 proxy?

A SOCKS5 proxy forwards network traffic at a lower level than an HTTP proxy, relaying raw TCP and UDP without reading or rewriting the payload. Because it doesn't try to understand the traffic, it carries anything — browsers, scrapers, messaging apps, email clients, game traffic — not just web requests. It's the protocol you reach for when an HTTP proxy can't carry what you're sending.

What is a SOCKS5 proxy?

SOCKS5 is a proxy protocol that forwards network traffic at a lower level than an HTTP proxy. What is the difference between SOCKS5 and HTTP proxies?

An HTTP proxy only handles web (HTTP/HTTPS) traffic and can read or modify it. A SOCKS5 proxy is protocol-agnostic: it relays raw TCP and UDP without interpreting the payload, so it supports any application, not just a browser. HTTP proxies suit pure web scraping; SOCKS5 is the choice when you need non-web protocols, UDP, or a single tunnel for a whole app.

What can I use a SOCKS5 proxy for?

Yes. Telegram supports SOCKS5 natively — paste the host, port and your username:password into Telegram's proxy settings and your traffic routes through the IP you chose, with country targeting if you need a specific region.

Does SOCKS5 support UDP?

Yes. Unlike an HTTP proxy, SOCKS5 can relay UDP as well as TCP, which is why it works for real-time traffic like voice, game clients and some streaming protocols that an HTTP proxy simply can't carry.

Is a SOCKS5 proxy faster than an HTTP proxy?

Often, yes. Because SOCKS5 forwards raw packets without parsing or rewriting the HTTP layer, it adds less overhead per request. The bigger win is compatibility: it carries traffic an HTTP proxy would reject outright.

How do I set up and authenticate a SOCKS5 proxy?

Point any SOCKS5-capable client — a browser, scraper, curl, or an app's proxy settings — at the endpoint host and port, and authenticate with username:password or an IP allowlist. The username carries targeting directives such as country, and a session token for a sticky IP.

How much do SOCKS5 proxies cost?

Are SOCKS5 proxies legal?

Using a SOCKS5 proxy is legal in most jurisdictions. As always, it's what you do through it that matters: collect public data, respect each service's terms, and don't access private systems or personal data.

SOCKS5 proxy vs VPN — what is the difference?

A VPN captures everything your device sends and encrypts the tunnel; a SOCKS5 proxy routes only the traffic you point at it and does not encrypt anything by itself. That sounds like the VPN always wins, until you need ten different exit IPs at once for ten different tasks — a VPN gives your whole machine one, while SOCKS5 lets each tool, browser profile or scraper thread carry its own. Use a VPN for privacy on your own connection; use SOCKS5 when the job is per-application control and many IPs. Since SOCKS5 adds no encryption, keep your traffic on HTTPS.

How do I use a SOCKS5 proxy on Android or iPhone?

There is no system-wide SOCKS5 setting on either platform — the Wi-Fi proxy fields accept HTTP only, which is why this trips people up. On both, SOCKS5 is configured inside the app that supports it: Telegram has it under Settings → Data and Storage → Proxy, and most torrent and automation clients expose their own proxy section. For device-wide routing you need a client app that builds a local tunnel from the SOCKS5 endpoint. On desktop, a browser extension per profile is the usual route.
