# How to set up a proxy in Chrome with a proxy extension

Setting up a proxy in Google Chrome with the Quantum Proxies Manager extension in four steps: sign in with the QuanticData API key, pick the plan and the country, choose a sticky session held for up to 60 minutes and turn the toggle on, then check the exit IP; the card lists the three things to verify when it fails.

To use a proxy in Chrome, add Quantum Proxies Manager, our free extension, sign in with your QuanticData API key, pick the plan, the country and a sticky session, then turn the toggle on. The extension answers the proxy's username and password itself, so Chrome never asks. Below: every step, ISP and mobile plans, the check and the fixes.

Chrome has no proxy field of its own, and a proxy with a username and password needs something to answer its sign-in. A proxy extension does both: it sets the proxy for Chrome only, through Chrome's own extension API, and it hands over the credentials when the proxy asks for them. Quantum Proxies Manager is the extension we publish for this, under our QuantumProxies.io brand, and it signs in with the same API key as your QuanticData account. The field names below are the ones in the extension, version 1.2.0.

## What you need

- **Google Chrome on a computer**, signed in to the Chrome profile you want to use with the proxy.

- **A QuanticData proxy plan:** Residential Premium, ISP or Mobile. The table further down says which one fits which job.

- **Your API key.** In the QuanticData dashboard open API Keys and click Copy key next to the key. It starts with `qd_live_` and has 64 characters after that.

- **The extension:** [Quantum Proxies Manager on the Chrome Web Store](https://chromewebstore.google.com/detail/quantum-proxies-manager/khepbigmnhdhfdedacokppmijjljkhnl). It is free; the proxy traffic comes from your plan.

Step 1 in the QuanticData dashboard: API Keys, then Copy key. The same key signs in to the extension.

**Try it on your own targets.** Every QuanticData account gets $2 of free API usage per month.

## Step by step: set up a proxy in Chrome

1. **Add the extension.** Open Quantum Proxies Manager on the Chrome Web Store and choose Add to Chrome.

2. **Pin it.** Click the puzzle icon at the right of the address bar and pin Quantum Proxies Manager, so its icon stays in the toolbar.

3. **Sign in.** Click the icon, paste your API key into the key field and click Connect. If you are already signed in to the QuantumProxies.io dashboard in the same Chrome, the extension offers Continue as your email instead.

4. **Choose the plan.** Proxy plan lists your active plans. Pick Residential Premium for most browsing; ISP and Mobile work the same way and are covered below.

5. **Choose the country.** Under Geo-Targeting set Country. State / Region and City are optional: leave them on All unless a site needs a specific place.

6. **Choose the session.** Under Session set Mode to Sticky and Hold for to the time you need, up to 60 min. Rotating gives a new IP on every connection, which suits scraping, not logins.

7. **Turn it on.** The toggle at the top turns the proxy on. The status changes to Connected, the toolbar icon shows ON and the card shows the exit IP and its location.

8. **Check it.** Open `ipinfo.io/json` in a tab: the city, region and time zone should match the country you chose.

Steps 2 and 3: the extension's own sign-in screen, with the key masked. Steps 4 to 6: plan, country and a sticky session. Steps 7 and 8: connected, and the same exit seen from a tab. A real check of a QuanticData Canada line on 23 October 2026, IP masked.

## How the extension handles the proxy sign-in

Every QuanticData proxy asks for a username and a password, and the username carries the targeting: the country, the region or city and the session. When you turn the toggle on, the extension asks our API for a line on your plan with the settings you chose, sets it as Chrome's proxy and keeps the credentials. When the proxy answers that it wants a sign-in, Chrome hands the request to the extension, which replies with the username and password. That is why no sign-in box appears in Chrome while the extension is connected.

| What the extension does | In practice |
| --- | --- |
| Sets the proxy for Chrome only | Other apps on the computer are not affected; Chrome's incognito windows follow the regular ones |
| Answers the proxy sign-in | No prompt and no password typed in Chrome |
| Connects over HTTP | Chrome cannot send a username and password to a SOCKS5 proxy, so HTTP is the one that works with a login |
| Skips local names | localhost and host names without a dot, such as an intranet name, stay direct |
| Blocks WebRTC from showing your real IP | On by default while the proxy is active; Options, Privacy, WebRTC Leak Protection |

The SOCKS5 point is Chrome's, not the proxy's: Chromium's own documentation says no authentication methods are supported for SOCKSv5 in Chrome. Our plans offer SOCKS5 for tools that can log in to it; see [SOCKS5 proxies](https://quanticdata.io/socks5-proxies/).

## Residential Premium in Chrome

Residential Premium gives home IPs in the country you pick, with State / Region and City when you need them. For anything with a login, use Sticky: the extension keeps one IP for the Hold for time you set, 1, 5, 10, 30 or 60 min. The Rotate button gets a fresh IP on the same plan and settings whenever you want one, and Rotating mode does it on every connection. The plans themselves are on the page for [QuanticData residential proxies](https://quanticdata.io/residential-proxies/).

## ISP proxies in Chrome

ISP plans are fixed addresses, so there is no country to pick in the extension: choose the plan in Proxy plan and turn it on. On an ISP plan with more than one IP, an IP Rotation card appears with Auto-rotate my dedicated IPs, Time-based or Per-request, every 10s up to 24 hours. Leave it off when an account should keep the same address, which is the reason to buy [ISP proxies](https://quanticdata.io/isp-proxies/) in the first place.

## Mobile proxies in Chrome

Mobile plans add a Carrier / ISP field under the country, so the exit can be a specific mobile network. Use Sticky for an account session, as with Residential Premium. Mobile IPs are shared by many real phones on the same carrier, which is why sites that are strict with other IPs often accept them; more on [mobile proxies](https://quanticdata.io/mobile-proxies/).

| Plan | In the extension | Good for |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Residential Premium | Country, State / Region, City; Sticky up to 60 min or Rotating | Most browsing and logins from a chosen country |
| ISP | No targeting, fixed IPs; optional auto-rotate when the plan has more than one | Accounts that should keep one address for months |
| Mobile | Country and Carrier / ISP; Sticky or Rotating | Phone-first platforms and sites strict with other IP types |
| Datacenter | Location of the gateway | Speed on sites that do not care about the IP type |

## One country per Chrome profile

Chrome keeps extension proxy settings per profile. The extension's proxy applies to the profile it is installed in, so two profiles can leave from two countries at the same time: add Quantum Proxies Manager to each profile, sign in once in each, and pick a different country or a different sticky session in each. Two windows of the same profile always share one proxy.

## Check that Chrome uses the proxy

Three checks, from quickest to most complete:

- **The status card.** Once connected it shows the exit IP, the country, the city and region, and the network.

- **Test and Leaks.** Test checks that the proxy responds. Leaks checks the exit IP, whether WebRTC exposes another address, and whether the computer's time zone matches the proxy's location.

- **A tab.** `ipinfo.io/json` answers through the proxy with the address and its location.

Our check for this guide, a Residential Premium sticky session with Country set to Canada on 23 October 2026:

| Field | Result |
| --- | --- |
| City | Caraquet |
| Region | New Brunswick |
| Country | CA |
| Time zone | America/Moncton |
| Network | AS855 Bell Canada |

## Errors and fixes

The extension shows its messages at the top of the popup. These are the ones you can meet, and what each one means.

The sign-in error and the order of the checks.

| What you see | Cause | Fix |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Invalid API key format | Part of the key, or a space, was pasted | Copy key again in API Keys and paste the whole value: `qd_live_` and 64 characters |
| Invalid API key | The key was rotated or deleted in the dashboard | Copy the current key from API Keys and sign in again |
| API key is disabled | The key was switched off | Enable it in API Keys |
| No active proxies in Proxy plan | The account has no active plan, or it has expired | Check My proxies in the dashboard: status and expiry date |
| You are out of bandwidth | The plan's traffic is used up | Add traffic to the plan, then pick it again |
| Test failed | The proxy did not answer the extension's test | Click Rotate for a fresh IP, or pick another country, then test again |
| Connected, but pages do not load or the IP does not change | Another proxy extension, or a policy set by your company, controls Chrome's proxy | Turn off other proxy extensions in Chrome's extensions page; on a managed computer, ask the administrator |
| Leaks shows Real IP exposed | WebRTC protection was turned off | Options, Privacy, WebRTC Leak Protection on |

One test outside the browser settles whether the plan itself works. Generate a sticky line in the dashboard, then run it with curl: if it returns an address in the right country, the plan is fine and the problem is in Chrome. The same plan as a line for other tools, from the Endpoint generator: Canada, sticky, HTTP.

```
curl -x http://residentialpremium.quantumproxies.io:8080 \
  -U "USER-country-ca-sid-test-ttl-10m:PASS" https://ipinfo.io/json
```

The generator also keeps a session for up to 1440 minutes, for tools other than the extension. If curl fails too, run through the [proxy not working checklist](https://quanticdata.io/blog/proxy-not-working-checklist/).

## Before you run accounts

A proxy changes where Chrome's traffic comes from, not what you are allowed to do on a site. Keep to each platform's terms and to the law where you work, and give each account its own profile and its own sticky session.

## FAQ

Quick answers on chrome proxy extension.

[Something else? Ask us](mailto:hello@quanticdata.io)

### How do I add a proxy to Chrome?

Add the Quantum Proxies Manager extension from the Chrome Web Store and pin it. Click its icon, paste your QuanticData API key and click Connect. Choose the plan, the country and a sticky session, then turn the toggle on. Chrome now leaves from the proxy, and the extension shows the exit IP and its location.

### Does Chrome support proxies with a username and password?

Chrome has no field for them: when a proxy asks for a sign-in, Chrome either shows a prompt or lets an extension answer. Quantum Proxies Manager answers it, so no prompt appears. This works for HTTP proxies; Chrome does not support a username and password on SOCKS5 proxies, which is why the extension connects over HTTP.

### Can I use my QuanticData account in Quantum Proxies Manager?

Yes. Copy your API key from API Keys in the QuanticData dashboard and paste it into the extension: it lists the plans on your account. The extension also offers Continue as your email when you are signed in to the QuantumProxies.io dashboard in the same Chrome, and your QuanticData email and password work there too.

### Does the proxy apply to incognito windows?

Yes. Chrome applies an extension's proxy settings to the regular windows of the profile, and incognito windows inherit them. Other Chrome profiles are separate: each one needs the extension and its own sign-in, which is how two profiles can use two countries at once.

### How do I get a new IP in Chrome?

Click Rotate in the extension for a fresh IP on the same plan and settings. With Mode set to Rotating, every connection gets a new IP. On an ISP plan with several addresses, Auto-rotate my dedicated IPs cycles through them on a timer or per request.

### Why does Chrome keep asking for the proxy username and password?

Chrome shows its sign-in box when a proxy asks for credentials and nothing answers. With Quantum Proxies Manager connected, the extension answers with the username and password of your plan, so the box does not appear. If it appears while the extension shows Connected, another proxy extension or a company policy is probably setting Chrome's proxy instead: turn the other proxy extensions off.

### Is Quantum Proxies Manager free?

Yes, the extension itself is free on the Chrome Web Store. It uses the traffic or the IPs of the proxy plan on your account.
